I'm curious about how many of you believe in a God. No, this isn't just "Jesus Christ", but "Allah", "Buddha", etc etc.

Please give an explanation as to why or why not; all statements such as "Of course there's a God!" will be met with a sarcastic response along with a mocking laugh -- you have been warned!

My opinion is there is no God. The chances of such a thing are less than one in a billion or so; I am, as such, an Atheist.

Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. I will admit that I think the concept of God is stupid and I cannot fathom why most would believe in such a thing - aside from, perhaps, fear - but that is their choice; please respect said choices when replying.

Also, I apologize if there is already a thread similar to this; I searched but found nothing.

I am very skeptical of the Bible itself, that it has probably been translated wrongly and to take its writing literally is probably the unintended way God would want us to worship Him. I would like to see a modern translation of the Codex Sinaiticus, the oldest surviving Bible man possesses.

If not for these reasons, I would be an atheist because the logical side of me says that God does not exist. Then again, there are things that are and things that happen that we can't explain with science or logic. Plus, nothing can ever be definitively proven as true by us lowly humans.

I think that science has the potential to explain everything in the physical world. Even if it can't explain something fully today, that shouldn't be a good reason to default to a supernatural explanation (not that this is what you are doing). Do you agree with this or are you saying there are things that science will never be able to explain?

I think that of the 10 commandments, only 4 or 5 are actually rational and useful. The other half mainly just deals with God's ego, which is apparently more important to spell out than things like rape and molestation. We all would have (and did) land on the useful 4-5 with or without religion.

My position on God's existence is that it would require a great deal of evidence to believe in such an extraordinary claim and so far there isn't any evidence to warrant a belief.

Life didn't just form by random chance... The chance of anything spontaneously coming into existence is such a low probability that it could be almost ruled as impossible. But that's not how life started, amino acids have already been created in labs from non living ingredients under conditions similar to the earth's early oceans. There are also many different theories that are very probable. There have even been meteoroids that have landed on earth that have contained many of the ingredients required to create life and even potentially create a cell that can self replicate. I find this almost infinitely more probable than random stories created by who the fuck knows, many of which are physically impossible. Not just don't make sense but have been disproven by science over and over again.

There is so much evidence against god existing than any logical / rational person could be converted.

And even so, if all of this made up bullshit actually turned out to be true, there are plenty of philosophical thought experiments to not believe in god, or to not obey god for any reason. Based on all the incoherent information and explanations of god.

First, you can't assign a probability to the non existence of God. Even if we wanted to, which "God" are we talking about? Your God? Or the thousands of other Gods that people believe in?
This is the reason you can't just say "no or yes". But if we did present all the evidence and assigned a probability to God's existence, it would be much worse than a mere 1 in a billion. Especially if you are referring to the God of the Bible or any other God from any major religion. Gods of major religions are ridiculously absurd. I'm not just bashing belief either. I completely respect Deism.
