You can rate + and - for a post.
What is it all about? Is it some kind of rating system to determine quality posts?

It goes into reputation in your profile.

I could see how that would be helpful on the tech boards, but in OT it would just be madness!

Explain more please, what can you do with reputation? Is it just for show/popularity, or can you do something extra?

+rep is given when someone replies to your question and solves your problem or helps you in anyway. then you will give him a +rep that will go into his profile. people with higher Reps are basically the most helpful people in the forums. I got to agree, in this kind of forums the rep system could be easily corruption. unless you guys can activate it only in the technical support forums. that would be a lot more efficient and the reps people will get will have more respect from others and more accuracy
to add something else to this:
High rep doesn't give you any advantages it just means more people trust your words and you will be respected through out the forum.

You can also filter posts by reputation.

Please refrain from sending me personal messages regarding technical support issues. Use the forums, that is what they are there for.

But reputation is by user, not by post.
"As soon as we started programming, we found to our surprise that it wasn't as easy to get programs right as we had thought. Debugging had to be discovered. I can remember the exact instant when I realized that a large part of my life from then on was going to be spent in finding mistakes in my own programs."

Post by distant in General Discussion noted.
- Do not abuse this system.
- Do not give negative rep...
There should always be a valid and legitimate reason...

This makes me wonder how my post has already dropped to -8 with just a question...

It's gonna be abused whether you tell people or not, that's why I'm not paying attention to it; someone doesn't like the advice I give, down goes the rep. Someone doesn't like me because I don't want to script something for them, down goes the rep.

Agreed. Simple solution would be to warn users who abuse reputation system.

A little reading goes along way, post count means nothing. Please don't PM, or IM me or the staff for technical support. Please use the boards support forums.
