-Update 8:25pm EST (10/22/08)-
As per this topic, the database has been mostly restored. The rest will be sorted out and repaired manually throughout the course of the next few days.

-Update 6:24am EST (10/20/08)-
As per Stealth, we can have his webhost, LunarPages, can restore a backup of the website before the corruption. At this point, it is a viable option. If you would like to see a backup restored, please voice your opinion in this thread. Also, if you are willing - you can donate to Stealth to help offset the $75 fee for restoring the backup. Of course, donating gives you a few other perks too!
Updates on the backup should be coming within the next few days. Thanks again for your patience.

-Update 11:30pm EST-
Critical Tech Support and Scripting Topics have been restored.
Most of the forum rule and major topics have been restored.

-Update 9:20pm EST-
All corrupted topics titles have been removed from member view. Because of this, it will appear that all topics have been deleted. This is not the case, we are working quickly to restore all Technical Support threads and any other pertinent StealthBot support information.

---

As of roughly 9:05pm EST - it was determined by the Administrative staff that the database corruption was unrepairable.
Due to this unfortunate error, all topic titles have been lost from the forum database.
Because of this corruption, all titles will display [Missing Title] - this applies to all forums.

At this time, it is possible that a backup may be available, but it could be several days before that information is given to us. Also, since the site has been unavailable for roughly 48 hours, we determined the best course of action would be to cut our loses and continue on with what we have.

We would ask at this time to continue on - posting as per usual. We would also request that you keep the discussion of this topic in the General Discussion forum and not make several threads pertaining to the same thing. The staff also requests that if you receive any additional forum errors, to please notify an Administrator via the website private-messaging system immediately.

If we gather any further updates or information, it will be passed down to you all as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience during this time.

I realize there are ALOT of posts in the scripting and script requests section (about 200 in each forum), so I may overlook some posts by no fault of my own. I have made a pinned topic that is open for posting if you are trying to search for a plugin that was once here but you can't seem to find it again.

The community and myself will greatly appreciate you posting there because it means I can find it and save it for everyone.

If you look closer, there are only very few topics, at least for you. The ones with missing titles are invisible.

Isn't it about time for a forum upgrade to the latest IPB version?

The database corruption makes it all the more appealing -- if all user accounts and topics are remade, it wouldn't make much more work...

But the topics aren't being remade, and neither are the user accounts. The topics are just hiding because they have no title.

But we don't need to restart if it's working fine. Just don't make topics too long before resolving them.

Alendar and Riffruff are saying stealthbot.net should upgrade to the newest IPB....

Nice job on getting the board back up so fast! If you restore the data will it overwrite any new posts made since the date you restore it to?

I highly doubt that someone will go through all the topics and rename every title back to around what it used to be.

I also think that it would be a waste of money for Stealth to pay for the database restoration. Users don't search now, and thats the only reason for restoring the database. Why waste $75, when people don't care about the old topics anyways?

There's not much to upgrading a minor version number and restarting with new accounts just for that cool looking user account stuff... that's all that's new I've seen. If we are going to upgrade, let's wait until the Administrators (it looks like the whole staff now a-days...) releases 2.7. Unless you want more side-tracks.

Then what was the point in the previous upgrade?

What benefits does this forum provide over the old forums? http://www.stealthbot.net/forum/
Or, the even older forums (which don't work) http://www.stealthbot.net/forums.php

The features were new "eye-candy". Otherwise, Stealth could have saved the $200 (or however much IPB costs) and just used PhpBB or SMF.

I don't know their reasons (I think back then they were using InvisionFree (that's v1.something IIRC) hosted on stealthbot.net... meaning an upgrade would be a major version number to the newest version) but the plan was to upgrade with the release of 2.7. Epic failure there.

So it's 2 minor versions behind now? Hahaha. Why wouldn't new versions be able to cope with databases from older versions?

They are. You run a simple database upgrade script. It's the modifications that don't cope to well.

I've made several modifications to the forum code to provide moderators with the ability to check each others power, as well as some things to reduce spam and control user warnings in a uniform fashion. These upgrades could always be replicated into the new respective files following a forum upgrade, but it would certainly take some time. This, as well as the time required for database conversion discourages an upgrade.

What exactly caused this corruption? I'm lost as to what had actually happened leading up to these events...

After 2.7's release, once 3.0 coding begins, the team should shift it's focus on upgrading the site and overhauling it to be much more secure, pretty, and user-friendly, but most of all that second one. The forums should be upgraded to the latest version, all themes should be updated and more should be added, the StealthBot ReadMe, Command List, Legal Information, and Donate pages should be made to match the entire site's themes, and the technical support forum should get an overhaul to separate each versions' topics, and have the Tutorials/FAQ's section a little easier to find for our less-intelligent users.
This upgrade/overhaul would show the Battle.Net community that StealthBot is starting with a clean, fresh slate, just like with version 3.0.
